Instructional Assistant

REPORTS TO: SCHOOL DIRECTOR

BASIC FUNCTION:

Classes at Summit Academy Community Schools typically consist of eighteen students with a teacher and an Instructional Assistant. The primary role of the teacher is to teach the curriculum to the students; however, he/she is ultimately responsible for the activities and behaviors of the entire class. Conversely, the role of the Instructional Assistant is primarily to manage the social skills and behaviors of the students. The Instructional Assistant intercepts negative behaviors, initiates warnings or time-outs, performs social autopsies, and removes children from the classroom when absolutely necessary. The Instructional Assistant also teaches the social skills curriculum during a regularly scheduled class. When the Instructional Assistant is not engaged in behavior management, he/she works as a teacher's aide, assisting with lesson delivery, managing materials, and tutoring individuals or groups of children.

EMPLOYMENT MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (48 semester or 72 quarter hours), an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education, or passing the Praxis II test for Paraprofessionals
Obtain and maintain Educational Aide permit though Ohio Department of Education
Ability to work with children who have special needs
Ability to work with people
Appropriate criminal records check by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal
Identification and Investigation and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation
Meets all health requirements as mandated by law
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with all employees

Responsibilities:

Model appropriate behaviors for students such as: patience, persistence, and self-control
Supervise students during transition time, lunch recess, bus duty, dismissal, assemblies, field trips, speakers
Responsible for de-escalating student negative behaviors, using a variety of methods depending upon the needs of the individual student
Must be able to prevent negative behaviors by anticipating problems and keeping students on task
Maintain observation records as directed by teachers/administration.
Track student behavior
Provide accurate and timely information as requested by teacher/administration
Report dangerous behaviors/environments to school director or administration immediately
Report any suspicion of child abuse and neglect through proper channels.
Insure that all school records and observations are accurate, secure, and comply with Privacy Act and ORC 3319.321
Maintain confidentiality regarding student information
Take measures to insure student information is kept secure (i.e., talking in an area where information may be overheard by others).
Assist teacher in the implementation of instructional activities
Suggest to instructor any accommodation that would better meet a student's needs
Assist teacher in securing materials and equipment.
Provides instructor with input regarding student behavior, academic performance and IEP progress
Communicate student concerns with teacher/staff as needed.
Proctor during student assessment
Participate in appropriate staff development activities to provide for professional growth
Maintain a positive classroom environment
Must be available to participate in after-school functions such as open houses, conferences or meetings
Must participate in Summer Camp Program, which may require day, evening and/or overnight participation. Summit Academy students may be participating in a day camp or residential camp program. This program needs to be staffed with Summit Academy employees.
Assist teacher/school director in maintaining a clean and safe school environment.
Perform any other task or activity as directed by administration.

All other responsibilities as set forth by the Building Director and CEO.


Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
